Like humans, dogs also have short-term memory but it lasts up to 2 minutes. This allows them to remember events, commands, and interactions from a few minutes to seconds. This memory helps dogs in basic training and interactions with their environment and humans.

Long-term memory helps dogs retain information over an extended period, from days to years. This helps them to remember people, places, and experiences, even after significant time lapses.

For example: Dr. Hepper conducted a test where He tested 18 mothers and 49 puppies and separated the puppies while they were 8 to 12 weeks old. After 2 years the puppies and their mother were united and 37 out of 49 puppies recognized their mothers.

From that, we concluded that dogs have long-term memory that lasts around 2-5 years. But like humans aging also affects dogs and their memory becomes weak with age.

Types of Long-term Memory

There are two kinds of long-term memory that dogs possess:

1. Semantic memory

Semantic memory refers to how dogs remember past knowledge. This enables them to remember training commands like “sit” or “leave” etc. and keep them for life. With this memory, they also can recall the things that the previous owner taught them.

2. Associative memory

Associative memory refers to how dogs remember past experiences. This helps them to establish emotional connections towards owners, places, situations, etc.

3. Training and Repetition

Repetition is key to keeping that thing in memory of dogs. Proper training sessions and commands result in solidifying memory. To remember things in the long term training and repetition are necessary.
